My painted dollhouse miniature chairs Portrait of Bucky

This is the second day the scale hasn't budged. On Memorial Day Monday Ed wanted to "go do something," so we invited my sister to go have lunch with us in Mount Pleasant, then visit the aquarium in Charleston. The restaurant we chose had a limited bar menu, so thinking I was still being "good" I ordered the grilled shrimp and side salad. The salad was gross. It was as if they took a room-temperature bag of Dole salad, dumped it in a bowl, and sprinkled cheddar cheese on top (I ate around the cheese). Actually, I'm certain that's exactly what they did. Bagged salad has that faint, almost chlorine taste that's a dead giveaway. I ate about 5 small forkfuls and gave up on it. The shrimp was REALLY good, but it was drenched in butter and salt, and I had been low-sodium, low-fat, nondairy for 3 weeks prior. Butter and salt is now the enemy. After the aquarium my sister announced she was "kinda hungry," so off we went to the Neighborhood Tap House, which also has a limited bar menu. I got the smoked chicken wings, which were also good. Well, that was enough to stall my weight loss progress and I've been kicking myself ever since. I have finally admitted to myself that I simply cannot eat the way everyone else does if I want to be healthy and maintain a healthy body weight, because after years of unhealthy food my body is not an "efficient machine," as my sister puts it. Yesterday I was back to my raw plant-based. In future we go to restaurants that have healthy options for me, or I don't eat, sip water and call it intermittent fasting.

I've started working on Bucky's portrait again after a dry spell of "life is too busy for art right now." And I'm on my second painted dollhouse chair (photos to come on Instagram @beadyeyedbeth). I think this will be my last animal portrait for a while, as I can feel a pull towards landscapes with stormy skies, and beach waves.

Ed's been working 6 days a week, and as he approaches retirement age he's feeling the frustration every time the guys he does subcontracting work for (mostly plumbing and electric, with some HVAC thrown in) keep piling new jobs and more work on him, and he has a hard time saying "no" to money. He has easily 3 times the energy I do, but he hasn't taken a boat out fishing at all this year, and only a couple of times last year, and he's really missing it. He's still looking for reliable help. The last two guys were a joke.

The art studio Ed built for me is still lacking proper countertops and trim work, but it's finished enough for me to use and that's what counts. Whenever he has free time he'll get it done.

The deck cats are doing well. Oscar has been sneezing with a runny nose, so I'm keeping an eye on him. The current crew consists of Oscar, Momma, Theon Greyboy, Creamsicle, Spot, Smoky, Callie, and Mini-Me. Indoor-Outdoor cat Morris is still overgrooming and losing hair even after prednisone and Apoquel, and I'm now convinced it's a pain response to his broken tooth. He has a vet dental appointment next week which will cost over $1,500 for an extraction and cleaning. My other vet in Aiken charges a third less than that, but it's a long drive and inconvenience, and Morris is already not feeling well, so I won't put him through that. Luna (dog) and Molly (cat) are doing great. Apoquel every day has been a miracle for Luna's allergies and yeast overgrowth and she will be on it for the rest of her life.

Current audiobook is Robin Hobb's "Fool's Assassin" as I'm working my way through her entire Realm of the Elderling's series for the 4th, or 5th time.

Today will be laundry, vacuuming, and working on Bucky and the dollhouse chair. No errands to run. No phone calls to make. It will be a good day.

So, I'm finding that this LJ thing may be a good idea for me. I've always wanted to keep a journal, but just never seem to have the desire to write with pen and paper. I type faster, anyway.

My day started out an hour later than I intended, after being awake during the night and then sleeping in a bit. I had wanted to get 3 rings done and shipped, the dogs bathed and the living room area run shampooed. Some of that didn't happen. I ended up in an Etsy convo for an hour with a guy who wanted to order 2 NYC token rings and wanted reassurance he would get them by the 12th. After many back-and-forths he settled on Priority Mail and we'll keep our fingers crossed it doesn't get hung up in the same USPS Washington state hub that caused Susan Dennis' ring delivery to be delayed. This guy is also in Seattle. He said that he's proposing marriage on the 12th and wants give her the NYC ring because that is where they met. Aww.

After settling that I spent at least an hour online looking at local animal shelters. The neighbors cat, who has adopted me and this house as his, found a baby bunny last night. Ed managed to get it away from him, but he was injured. I tried to patch him up a bit, wrapped a kitchen towel lightly around him, and put him in a box in a quiet, dark part of the house. This morning I found him dead, most likely more from shock than his injuries. I really like the cat, he's so affectionate and goofy, but he's doing what cats do -- hunting and killing. I have multiple bird feeders hanging from my cabin porch, and the cat's been catching and killing the birds. I feel like I'm just luring the birds in for him to kill. We usually have a large amount of anoles around the house, but he's been killing and eating those too. This has been going on for months. The neighbor has pretty much abandoned him, not caring where he is. I started feeding him last fall to see if that would make him hunt and kill less, but it hasn't. After my indoor cat Sugar died of a stroke last year I swore no more cats. Within a couple of months this kitty showed up. I really don't want another cat, but I don't want to just abandon him either. Ed REALLY doesn't want him here. So, after the last-straw of the bunny last night I posted about my dilemma on Facebook out of desperation. A FB friend happens to work in cat rescue and posted on her FB page about this kitty being available for adoption. Keep your fingers crossed that someone will give him a good home. He's a great cat, neutered, affectionate and funny as hell, and just wants a human to attach himself to. I call him "Goober."

By the time I got out into my cabin workshop the aforementioned guy's order came in and I printed it out and added it to the pile. I got a Silver state quarter ring (NYS) made and mailed to Washington (odd that I'm getting so many Washington customers, eh?) and ran it to the PO. Then back to the cabin and got a personalized metal guitar pick done, and 3 more token rings started. I'll get them finished, packaged to the PO in the morning. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the dogs baths done.

Ed went to bed around 8:00 (!!). He's been working so hard that I can't blame him. I can't wait until this big renovation job is over so I can actually spend a little time with him again. He and his crew were hired weeks ago to renovate 2 condemned buildings in the ghetto and turn them into safe, livable apartments. It's taken over his life. He's seeing light at the end of the tunnel and hopes to be done in 2 weeks. He just bought a used boat and I'm looking forward to going out with him on the weekends. He likes shark fishing so we go out from Charleston harbor.

Sometime this afternoon I noticed an annoying tickle in my throat. I JUST got over seasonal allergies and then a cold, so I refuse to be getting sick again! I just downed some peppermint tea and it seemed to help.

I'm looking for some interesting LJ blogs to follow. If you're reading this and know of any or have one yourself please share! I'm not into politics or lots of drama. I am in to people who live interesting lives and I love a good story. I'm drawn to creative people, and I like happy stuff. :-)
